How to Conquer the Avocado

By Treves Janszen @ Thrive Nutrition

Today’s post is about a very special superfood we recommend to everyone as a healthy fat. The alligator pear or avocado is actually from the fruit family. While most fruits are high in carbs, this fruit is high in monounsaturated fat which is heart healthy and loaded with health benefits. The avocado is high in fiber and contains 20 different vitamins and minerals. It helps to lower cholesterol and triglycerides too. Most know that guacamole is made from avocados but they are also a great substitute for mayo on sandwiches, chicken/tuna and egg salad or toss into a salad instead of dressing. Let us show you how to start using this wonderful fruit!

1. Look for avocados that are just a little soft when gently squeezed.

2. With a sharp knife cut around the avocado from the top to bottom.

3. Holding the avocado in your hands give it twist.

4. Once it is open, you will find a pit inside. Hold the pit side in your hand on top of a folded towel for protection. Strike the pit with the knife and twist. The pit should pop right out still stuck to the knife.

5. Using a spoon gently scoop out the flesh into a container.
